BSN Essentials

Domain 1: Knowledge for Nursing Practice

Knowledge of nursing practice is a combination of integrating, translating, and applying nursing knowledge from other education disciplines to form the basis of clinical judgment. My nursing knowledge has been built through my education at Fort Hays State University. Throughout my education I have built my nursing practice and skills from my clinicals and lecture classes to become a competent nurse.

Domain 2: Person-Centered Care

Person-centered care is nursing care is holistic care that focuses on individual patient needs in combination with appropriate and evidence based practice. Throughout my clinical experience I grew in my ability to notice client needs and based on personal preference provide care that was holistic to their overall needs. Individual needs that I have worked with are spiritual, religious, cultural, as well as age related needs.

Domain 3: Population Health

The domain of population health is important for nurses to deliver in order to maintain community health. I participated in the HaysMed free flu drive. I administered flu shots to members of the Hays community to assist in preventing a flu outbreak. Other aspects of population health I have experience in is health department nursing where health and wellness services as well as prevention and education are offered to members of the community.

Domain 4: Scholarship for Nursing Practice

Scholarship for nursing is not only being able to apply knowledge of nursing but also generate and create new knowledge to improve health care. Throughout my education in the nursing program at FHSU I was able to develop skills to improve my ability to apply my critical thinking skills. During our code blue simulation through collaboration we were able to apply our critical thinking skills and collaborate to create safe health care decisions that improved the patient's outcome.

Domain 5: Quality and Safety

The domain of quality and safety is important in being able to apply new and established safety and science principles to enhance quality of patient care and minimize harm to patients. I have shown skills in this by being able to follow facility protocols on how to perform skills. As well as staying on top of new research on how to improve patient safety. Throughout my practice of skills in my clinical experience I am competent in sterile and aseptic techniques to promote patient health.

Domain 6: Interprofessional Partnerships

Interprofessional partnerships include partnerships between all healthcare members with the patient and family to improve healthcare for the client and create positive outcomes. Through my clinicals I am able to collaborate with other nursing staff and healthcare workers with the client to provide high quality care which leads to more positive outcomes for the patient. Through my simulations I am able to collaborate with other nursing students to work together and create positive outcomes for the patient.

Domain 7: System-Based Practice

System-based practice is the ability to coordinate nursing resources effectively to provide quality and equal care to diverse patient populations. My clinical rotation at the Wesley Medical center Emergency Department provided me with more experience with diverse populations. My experience at a larger trauma facility gave me insight on how larger towns have different diversity of populations than rural areas. Those larger hospitals have systems in place to care for their own community needs for example the substance misuse population that are frequent patients of the ED.

Domain 8: Information and Health Care Technologies

This domain of nursing is important to take information and develop new ideas for improved health care. This process of using informatics and technology helps create safe, effective, and high-quality care for patient and improving patient outcomes by finding the best nursing practice. During my third semester in the nursing program at FHSU, I did a research project on the effects of the “Golden Hour” on newborn infants. We did research through online databases as well as present our findings at John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activities Day (SACAD). My co-researcher and I were presented with a second place award for our research and presentation.
